The term\nmeditation refers to a broad variety of practices that includes techniques\ndesigned to promote relaxation, build internal energy or life force (qi, ki,\nprana, etc.) and develop compassion, love, patience, generosity, and\nforgiveness. Meditation is a habitual process of training your mind to focus\nand redirect your thoughts. You can use it to increase awareness of yourself\nand your surroundings. Many people think of it as a way to reduce stress and\ndevelop concentration. People also use the practice to develop other beneficial\nhabits and feelings, such as a positive mood and outlook, self-discipline,\nhealthy sleep patterns and even increased pain tolerance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few minutes of practice\nper day can help ease anxiety. \u201cResearch suggests that daily meditation may\nalter the brain\u2019s neural pathways, making you more resilient to stress,\u201d says\npsychologist Robbie Maller Hartman, PhD, a Chicago health and wellness coach. It&#8217;s\nsimple. Sit up straight with both feet on the floor. Close your eyes. Focus\nyour attention on reciting &#8212; out loud or silently &#8212; a positive mantra such as\n\u201cI feel at peace\u201d or \u201cI love myself.\u201d Place one hand on your belly to sync the\nmantra with your breaths. Let any distracting thoughts float by like clouds.\nTake a 5-minute break and focus on your breathing. Sit up straight, eyes\nclosed, with a hand on your belly. Slowly inhale through your nose, feeling the\nbreath start in your abdomen and work its way to the top of your head. Reverse\nthe process as you exhale through your mouth. Mentally scan your body to get a\nsense of how stress affects it each day. Lie on your back, or sit with your\nfeet on the floor.
